Anthony Hopkins has spent decades in the spotlight, but he’s also been open about his personal life. In his 2025 memoir, We Did OK, Kid, he reflects on his estranged relationship with his daughter, Abigail. When asked about reconciliation, the 88-year-old said he “did what [he] could.” His wife, Stella, sent Abigail an invitation to reconnect, but there was no response. Hopkins said he wishes her well and doesn’t want to carry resentment, calling it “death” to live that way.
Abigail Hopkins, 57, is an actress, musician, and documentary filmmaker. She trained at New York’s Lee Strasberg Institute and appeared briefly in her father’s films Shadowlands and The Remains of the Day in the 1990s. She released three albums before studying filmmaking at a master’s level. In December 2020, she was diagnosed with stage three bowel cancer but is now in remission. Abigail made a documentary about her experience called Under This Sky and released a charity album, Stardust.
Abigail’s mother is Petronella Barker, 83, a British actress. She and Hopkins were married from 1966 to 1972. Hopkins has described their marriage as doomed by “opposing personalities” and his alcoholism. In his memoir, he recalls leaving the house when Abigail was two after a particularly heated argument, saying he feared for himself and his wife. He continued to provide financial support but had little contact with Abigail for years, attempting reconnection when she was nine and again during her teens.
Abigail has said she never felt close to her father and couldn’t discuss major life issues with him. Hopkins calls their estrangement the “saddest fact” of his life and his “greatest regret,” but he believes leaving may have been the best choice for everyone at the time. He hopes Abigail knows his door is always open and that he will always be sorry for the pain caused.
Anthony Hopkins has no other children. He remarried after his first marriage ended, first with Jennifer Lynton, which ended due to his infidelity, and has been married to Stella Arroyave since 2003.
