Obnews Tech Desk: In a significant change, Apple has officially discontinued support for iCloud backup for iPhones and iPads running iOS 8 or earlier. As announced last November, the change took effect this week, removing the iCloud backup feature for older devices.
iCloud backup will not be available in iPhone and iPad running iOS 8 or earlier.
From now on, iPhones and iPads running iOS 8 or earlier can no longer use iCloud to create backups. According to MacRumours, Apple has also deleted any existing iCloud backups of devices running these older operating systems. This change is in line with Apple's move to streamline and modernize its cloud services, which now require at least iOS 9 or later for backup functionality.
For iCloud backup, you will have to update to iOS 9 or newer version.
Apple clarified that iCloud backups are no longer available for these older devices, but apps and data stored on the devices are unaffected. However, users can still manually backup their devices to a Mac or Windows PC. If you have a device running iOS 8 or older and you want to restore iCloud backup capabilities, your only option is to update the device to iOS 9 or newer.
Discontinuing iCloud backup support for devices running iOS 8 or earlier is part of Apple's broader strategy to align its cloud services with more modern software requirements.
With the release of iOS 9, Apple began using CloudKit for iCloud backups, leaving behind an older backup system that is now being phased out. For users who are unable to update their devices, manual backup on a computer is the only available option for data protection.
