  • Apple has re-introduced debit-credit card payments for App Store and iCloud in India after 5 years.
  • This major change was made after the payment system was updated as per RBI’s card tokenization norms.
  • Currently this facility is available for limited users and still have to wait for Apple Pay.

Tech company Applehas re-introduced debit and credit card payment facility for App Store and iCloud payments. The tech giant had decided to discontinue the card payment facility 5 years ago after the implementation of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) card tokenization in 2021. After this, users had to use prepaid Apple ID balance along with UPI, net banking to purchase apps or for subscription. But now the company has taken a big decision and after 5 years debit-credit card payment has come back. Due to this decision taken by the company, the users have got a big relief.

Card payments for App Store and iCloud purchases

Thanks to RBI’s card tokenization framework, users will now be able to pay for Apple’s App Store and iCloud purchases through debit and credit cards. However, the company has launched this payment system for limited users only. Now users will be able to use other payment options along with UPI. The biggest advantage of this is that now users don’t have to rely on any single payment method for in-app purchases or subscriptions. Along with this, Apple users can now use debit and credit cards for App Store purchases, in-app payments, Apple Music, iCloud Plus and other Apple services, whereas earlier they only had the option of UPI or internet banking. Card payment facility available again after 5 years

The tech company had stopped paying through debit and credit cards in India in 2021. The company had decided to discontinue the service even before the tokenization mandate was implemented by the RBI. Under this, merchants were not allowed to store card details of customers. It is mandatory to replace these payment details with a special token. But now the company has updated its payment system as per RBI norms. Due to this, now the users have been given the option to pay by card again.

Apple Pay will have to wait

Although card payments have made a comeback, no official announcement has been made regarding Apple Pay yet. The company has not yet announced any timeline for the launch of this digital payment service in India. Some experts believe that after complying with the RBI’s ‘tokenization’ norms, Apple’s move could make the payment experience easier and more convenient for Indian users. In such a case, if this feature is made available to all users in the coming months, it will make the Apple ecosystem even easier to use.
