Apple’s 1st Foldable Phone Can Have Waiting Period Of Months – Senior Analyst
Apple’s first foldable iPhone could become one of the most sought-after smartphones in recent years, but buyers may face long waiting periods after launch. Renowned Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has suggested that the device is likely to follow a launch pattern similar to the iconic iPhone X in 2017, where supply constraints delayed availability despite strong consumer demand.
According to Kuo’s latest supply-chain survey, Apple may unveil the foldable iPhone alongside its regular iPhone lineup in late 2026. However, pre-orders and commercial sales could begin weeks later due to limited production capacity.
Why Kuo Is Comparing It To The iPhone X
The analyst believes the foldable iPhone faces challenges similar to those encountered during the launch of the iPhone X. In 2017, Apple announced the iPhone X together with the iPhone 8 series, but the premium device reached customers later because of manufacturing difficulties associated with its OLED display and Face ID technology.
Kuo argues that Apple’s foldable iPhone represents a similarly ambitious technological leap. The complexity of manufacturing foldable displays and assembling the device at scale could restrict initial production volumes, leading to delayed deliveries and limited availability.
Limited Supply Expected In 2026
Industry estimates indicate Apple may ship only 7-8 million foldable iPhones during the second half of 2026. Of those, just 500,000 to 1 million units are expected to be available during the third quarter, significantly lower than the projected shipments for the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max models.
Because of these constraints, Kuo believes Apple may announce the foldable device during its traditional September launch event but delay sales until the fourth quarter of 2026.
Premium Price, Strong Demand
Despite the expected supply challenges, demand for Apple’s first foldable phone is projected to be exceptionally strong. Kuo estimates the device could be priced between $2,300 and $2,500, making it the most expensive iPhone ever launched. Even at that price, he expects pre-orders to sell out quickly.
The analyst also predicts delivery wait times could stretch to four to six weeks or longer, with shortages potentially continuing through the end of 2026. Some resellers may even charge substantial premiums due to limited supply.
A Major Test For Apple’s Foldable Ambitions
Apple has so far stayed away from the foldable smartphone market dominated by competitors such as Samsung Electronics and several Chinese brands. The launch of its first foldable iPhone will therefore be closely watched by both consumers and investors.
While the initial response is expected to be strong, Kuo believes the true measure of demand will emerge in late 2026 and early 2027, once production stabilises and the excitement surrounding the launch begins to fade.
