AQI crosses 500 in Delhi, smoke everywhere

The capital Delhi, which is facing the brunt of both fog and pollution, has now been engulfed by cold. Yes, on the morning of Saturday 20th December the weather suddenly took a turn, where severe cold, icy winds and dense fog have increased the problems of the people. India Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert regarding dense fog for December 21 and 22.

During this period, the maximum temperature of Delhi has fallen to 21 degrees Celsius and the minimum to 7 degrees Celsius. At the same time, the situation on the pollution front seems to be becoming more serious, because the air quality index of Noida has reached close to 410, which is considered very dangerous for health. This change is considered very important both at the level of weather and pollution.

In Delhi-NCR, winter is no longer limited to night only, but the effect of cold is clearly being felt during the day also. In the last 3 to 4 days, a drop of about 3 degrees Celsius has been recorded in the maximum temperature. While till a few days ago the maximum temperature was around 24 degrees Celsius, now it has come down to 21 degrees Celsius. The sunlight is becoming weaker during the day and the movement of clouds continues, due to which the cold is increasing further. The wind speed is also making the weather colder, which was 11 kilometers per hour in the last 24 hours and is now likely to blow at around 10 kilometers per hour.

The pollution situation in Delhi-NCR remains very worrying. AQI has been recorded in the very poor to severe category in major areas. Delhi’s AQI 580, Shahdara’s 784, Daryaganj’s AQI 736 and Shastri Nagar’s AQI 643 have been recorded. AQI remains between 700 to 800 across Delhi-NCR, due to which the risk of respiratory diseases has increased. Visibility has been recorded less than 100 meters in many areas in the last 24 hours, reflecting the combined effect of dense fog and pollution. People are being advised to remain alert and avoid unnecessary going out.

According to meteorologists, there is no possibility of much relief in the situation in the coming days. According to the Meteorological Department, an active western disturbance is reaching the mountains, which will cause good snowfall between December 20 and 22. Its effect will be visible in the form of clouds and fog in the plains. Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan and northwestern Uttar Pradesh may remain cloudy and the effect of fog will persist in the Gangetic plains.
