AR Rahman, Saira Banu separate after 29 years of marriage due to ’emotional strain’

New Delhi: Ace musician AR Rahman’s wife Saira Banu has announced her separation from her husband after 29 years of marriage. On Tuesday, November 19, night, Banu confirmed to the press that she is separating from her husband AR Rahman.

AR Rahman tied the knot with Saira Banu in 1995 in an arranged marriage setup. He once revealed to Simi Garewal on her chat show that his mother fixed his marriage to her as he didn’t had time to go and find a bride for himself so he chose an arranged marriage. He also mentioned that he asked his mother to find him a ‘simple’ bride who wouldn’t give him much trouble, allowing him to focus on his music and hopefully inspire him.

The statement to the press further cited “significant emotional strain in their relationship due to the tensions and difficulties that have created an insurmountable gap that neither of them are able to bridge at this time”. The statement further stated that the “decision is taken out of pain and agony” and requested privacy and understanding from the public during the “challenging time as she navigates a difficult chapter of her life”. The statement was shared by the lawyer Vandana Shah, representing Saira Banu.

The duo has three children together – Khatija, Raheem and Ameen. Ar Rahman’s daughter Khatija Rahman tied the knot in 2022 in a grand wedding ceremony. The pictures from her wedding also went viral on social media.

When Rahman opened up about his first meeting with Saira

In an interview, AR Rahman opened up about his first meeting with his wife in 1995. Recalling the meeting, he called her “beautiful and gentle”, saying that she was very quiet in those days. He also shared that he asked her if she wanted to marry him. He also said, “Now she’s anything but quiet.”

He also talked about his family’s reaction to their marriage and said that she comes from a Gujarati background and him from a South Indian family and hence, it was “difficult to adjust” as his mother was possessive about him. However, after the birth of their first daughter, everything was fine.
