Arbitrary recovery on urea, double blow on farmer, responsible silence
Settlement. The demand for urea increased after the first irrigation of Rabi crops in Basti district. In the cold morning of the crop season, the farmer standing on the ridge of the fields was looking not only at the sky but also at the direction of the system that the crops standing in the fields were waiting for fertiliser, while the arbitrariness and loose monitoring of the committees made the situation more complicated. The situation is no longer limited to production, but is directly impacting the farmer’s income, family and kitchen. The negligence extending from the supply to the distribution of urea has shaken the faith on which not only agriculture but the country and the society depend. According to the news received, the case of urea being sold at Rs 275 per bag at the cooperative societies in Sadhana Samiti Khoria Basodhi and Sajhara Mahatha under development block Bankati is not only an economic irregularity but also a living example of administrative apathy.
Farmers have confirmed the illegal recovery by giving on-camera statements, which is exposing the truth of administrative surveillance. How the government system is disintegrating before the eyes of the farmers and the responsible system remains silent. Farmers who are struggling with the need of fertilizer at the crucial juncture of the crop season are now facing the double whammy of expensive prices. According to the farmers, when they go to the committees to buy fertilizer, they are asked for more money instead of the fixed rate. When questions are raised, sometimes it is said that the stock is out and sometimes there is no order.
Due to the fear of not getting fertilizer for their crops on time, farmers are forced to pay higher prices. Informed people of the district say that the same situation prevails in other committees of the area, where the rules are limited to paper. Irregularities in fertilizer distribution have increased the cost of farming and deepened the crisis for farmers who are already limited in profits.
If action is not taken in time, this system will further strengthen black marketing. It is noteworthy that in every crop season, complaints of shortage of fertilizer and overcharging have been coming to the fore. Due to weak control from supply to distribution, accountability is not being fixed on the committees, due to which Annadata has to bear the direct loss. When the District Agricultural Defense Officer was talked to in this regard, he said that the above matter was not in our notice till now, now the matter has come to light, appropriate and legal action will be taken by the department after getting it investigated.
