Archery World Cup Stage 2: Top archers set to compete in Shanghai
A strong 16-member Indian Archery team is set to begin their campaign at the second stage of the Archery World Cup in Shanghai from May 5-10.
The competition in Shanghai will follow a structured schedule spread over five days starting with the compound archery qualification rounds on May 5, followed by recurve qualification on May 6. The elimination rounds for compound events are scheduled for May 7 with final on May 9. Similarly, recurve eliminations will be held on May 8 and finals on May 10.
The second leg will see participation from over 300 archers from 44 countries as most Asian countries field strong teams with an eye on the Asian Games scheduled later this year.
Elite archers from across the world including all four world number ones — Brady Ellison, Kang Chaeyoung, Mike Schloesser and Andrea Becerra — will also be competing. Reigning compound men’s World Cup champion Emircan Haney will also be in action at the Yuanshen Sports Centre.
India had mixed performance in the season opener with only women’s compound team comprising Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Madhura Dhamangaonkar, and Pragati making the podium. The trio won a gold medal after defeating the USA by a close margin of 233-232.
However, the recurve archers faced a difficult start, with most players exiting in the early elimination rounds. The men’s recurve team also suffered an early loss against Spain. In compound individual events, Ojas Deotale and Pragati narrowly missed out on bronze medals.
With a strong start in compound events and scope for improvement in recurve, the Indian contingent will now look to deliver better performances in Stage 2 and strengthen their chances of qualifying for the World Cup Final in Saltillo in September.
The four stages this year are being held in Puebla, Shanghai, Antalya, and Madrid. After the completion of all four stages, the top eight archers in each category will qualify for the World Cup Final.
