Are Bhooth Bangla and Bhool Bhulaiyaa connected? Here’s what Priyadarshan revealed

As the first trailer for Bhooth Bangla dropped, fans immediately noticed a familiar “AND vibe,” from the returning cast to the sprawling mansion setting. However, director Priyadarshan has moved quickly to quell rumors. In a recent interview with Hindustan Times, the filmmaker categorically denied any narrative connection between his upcoming film and the 2007 blockbuster Bhool Bhulaiyaa.

The director addressed reports claiming that Bhooth Bangla was originally scripted as a sequel to Bhool Bhulaiyaa before being reworked. “That is not right. It’s all false news,” Priyadarshan stated. While the new film features the iconic trio of Akshay Kumar, Paresh Rawal, and Rajpal Yadav in a haveli, the director maintains that the story is a 100% original standalone venture.

To help audiences manage their expectations, Priyadarshan explained the fundamental difference in genre:

  • Bhool Bhulaiyaa – A psychological thriller that used medical science (Dissociative Identity Disorder) to explain supernatural events.
  • Bhooth Bangla – An “absolute fantasy” that explores Indian superstitions and ghost beliefs.

Interestingly, Priyadarshan revealed that he is using quantum physics to provide a different kind of “scientific reasoning” for this story. “Quantum physics says you can take one consciousness to another body,” he noted, hinting at the logic behind the film’s supernatural elements.

Despite the lack of a story connection, the director admitted to including deliberate nods to the past. He confirmed that the song “Will write Ram Ji Akar” was intentionally designed to evoke the same energy as the Bhool Bhulaiyaa title track to celebrate his reunion with Akshay Kumar after 14 years.
