Are you taking care of your scalp enough? Dermatologist shares pro tips

New Delhi: The scalp is an extension of the face. It is more sensitive and delicate due to sebaceous and sweat glands. Dominated by countless hair follicles, there is also a weak barrier to protect the skin compared to the rest of the body. For instance, issues like scratching, dandruff flaking, and bumpiness can occur when the scalp is not adequately cared for, which affects hair growth.

Essentially, the scalp is considered the foundation of hair growth. It is where essential nutrients, moisture, and oxygen flow from the bloodstream. Just as skincare is pivotal in maintaining healthy skin, scalp care is now touted as the new regimen for follicle growth. On the other hand, a well-maintained scalp encourages optimal and resilient growth, making it imperative to have a scalp care regime in place.

In an interaction with News9Live, Dr. Simal Soin, Founder and Chief Dermatologist, AAYNA Clinics and Chief Medical Officer, Clinikally, shared some simple scalp care tips.

Taking good care of the scalp

Our scalp requires good cleansing as well as moisturising. Regular cleansing, i.e., three to four times per week, can keep it healthy. Additionally, using an optimal amount of moisturiser along with a hair mask can further heal the scalp, protecting it from potential issues. You can schedule a weekly or fortnightly visit to a salon for deep cleansing, which will help rejuvenate the scalp.

Balance Scalp pH Levels

Just like the skin of the rest of our body, the scalp also has its natural pH level. It is instrumental in maintaining the overall follicle health. Lifestyle-related factors such as using harsh products, environmental pollutants, stress, or excessive washing can disrupt the pH balance, leading to scalp irritation and issues like dryness or oiliness.
Using scalp care products formulated with natural ingredients can help restore balance and prevent issues related to scalp sensitivity.

Reduces dandruff and flakiness

Dandruff has become a popular scalp concern, often symptomatic by itching and discomfort. One of the most common triggers of dandruff is scalp moisture, which could either lead to dry skin or excess oil production. However, this can be prevented by adopting a dedicated routine to keep it hydrated and balanced. Ingredients like tea tree oil, salicylic acid, and aloe vera can help soothe the inflammation caused by dandruff, preventing it from aggravating and leading to flakiness or greasiness.

Prevents chances of hair loss

Hair loss is not just a hair condition. It can be distressing for many. Though it can be triggered by many factors, such as medical conditions, changes in diet, hormonal imbalances, etc., one of the major contributors to it is poor scalp health. Not adopting a good scalp care regimen can lead to weakened hair follicles, which leads to hair thinning and shedding. Incorporating ingredients like biotin, peptides, and essential fatty acids can help strengthen hair and stimulate growth, effectively reducing the risk of hair loss.

Alleviate irritation and itching.

These days, people experiencing itchy scalps have become very common. It can be caused by dryness, product buildup, or certain medical conditions like psoriasis. However, this is reversible with a good scalp care routine, which can help alleviate discomfort and irritation by providing the necessary hydration and soothing properties. Ingredients such as chamomile and lavender are known for their calming effects on the skin and can help reduce inflammation.

Enhances texture

Optimal scalp care can significantly enhance the overall texture and shine of hair. Scalp treatments and exfoliation can remove the buildup that weighs hair down, adding more volume and luster. Additionally, when the scalp is nourished and hydrated, the hair that grows from it is often smoother and shinier. Regular scalp care ensures that hair restores and maintains its natural beauty, making it easier to style and manage.

Bottom line

Scalp care is an essential but often overlooked aspect of hair health. By dedicating time and attention, you can reap several benefits, from promoting healthy hair growth and preventing hair loss to enhancing texture and shine. A well-nourished scalp not only contributes to the overall beauty of your hair but also supports its health and resilience against various challenges.
