Argentina in semi-finals, defeated Switzerland in extra time, now face England
Kansas City. Argentina faced Switzerland on Sunday (July 12) in quarter-final number-4 of the FIFA World Cup 2026. In this match held at Kansas City Stadium in Kansas City, Argentina defeated Switzerland 3-1. Now on July 16, Argentina team will face England in the semi-finals. In the first semi-final, Spain and France will face each other on July 15.
The match between Argentina and Switzerland remained tied at 1-1 till the scheduled time, due to which extreme had to be used. In the second half of extra time, substitute player Julian Alvarez gave Argentina a 2-1 lead by scoring a goal from Josh Lopez. Alvarez scored this goal in the 112th minute. Then in injury time (120+1st minute) Lautaro Martínez scored a goal to make the score 3-1.
Lautaro Martínez also came on the field as a substitute player. Argentina captain Lionel Messi did not score any goal in this match, but he definitely assisted Alexis McAllister in scoring a goal in the 10th minute of the game.
Let us tell you that England had defeated Norway 2-1 in the quarter-finals. That match was tied at 1-1 till the scheduled time. Then England won in extra time. The hero of England’s victory was Jude Bellingham, who scored two goals.
The game remained like this till the 90th minute

Switzerland suffered a big blow in the 72nd minute, when Briel Embolo was shown the yellow card for the second time in the match after VAR interference. Since this was the second yellow card of the match for Embolo, the referee immediately showed him a red card. Even after this incident, Switzerland did not lose courage. Despite playing with 10 players, the Swiss team was successful in taking the match to extra time.

On the other hand, Switzerland had achieved the top position in Group B. It defeated Canada as well as Bosnia and Herzegovina, while drawing with Qatar. After this, Switzerland defeated Algeria 2-0 in the round of 32. Then Switzerland defeated Colombia 4-3 in the penalty shootout and qualified for the quarter-finals for the first time in 72 years.
