Questions raised on refereeing after Argentina’s victory, FIFA will investigate the decision
Argentina vs Egypt Controversy: After the defeat in the round of 16 match against Argentina, the Egyptian Football Federation has raised serious questions on the decisions of the match referee François Letexier. Egypt claims that several controversial decisions taken during the match changed the course of the match and the team had to face defeat.
Egypt had taken an early lead in the match, but in the last minute, Argentina made a spectacular comeback and won. Following the defeat, the Egyptian Football Federation has lodged a formal complaint with FIFA against the French referee and his official team.
Demand to remove referee from FIFA
According to Spanish media reports, Egyptian Football Federation President Hany Abo Rida has demanded an investigation into several decisions of referee François Letexier in a complaint sent to FIFA. The federation alleges that many important decisions went against Egypt, which affected the outcome of the match. The complaint also demands that the French referee team be removed from the remaining matches of the tournament, as questions have been raised on their performance.
FIFA will conduct technical review
According to French media reports, FIFA refereeing officials will now conduct a detailed review of François Letexier’s performance. During this, match officials’ reports, technical evaluation and disputed video footage will be analyzed. After the review, it will be decided whether the concerned referee will be given responsibility in the upcoming matches of the tournament or not.
However, the report also states that no member country or football association has the right to veto the appointment of a referee. This decision rests entirely within the jurisdiction of the FIFA Referees Committee.
Such controversies have come up before too
Controversies regarding refereeing decisions in FIFA tournaments have arisen before. Even after the round of 16 match played between South Korea and Italy in the 2002 World Cup, Italy had filed a complaint against Ecuadorian referee Byron Moreno. However, even at that time FIFA did not officially acknowledge that the complaint resulted in the referee being removed from further matches.
