Chess: Aronyak Ghosh becomes India’s 95th Grandmaster
Aronyak Ghosh became India’s 95th chess Grandmaster on Sunday, achieving his final GM norm during the 2026 Bangkok Chess Club Open in Thailand.
Ghosh, who hails from Kolkata, scored seven points in nine rounds finished joint first in the competition.
Ghosh, who is the reigning national rapid champion, had achieved his first GM norm nearly three years ago in 2023 at the Sants Open.
He earned his second norm the next year at the Annemasse Masters in 2024 before having to wait over two years to achieve his third and final GM norm.
Ghosh had also featured at the 2025 FIDE World Cup in Goa last year, winning his first round match before losing to Levon Aronian in the second to crash out of contention.
The now 22-year-old Ghosh had shot to fame in 2019, winning a bronze medal at the U16 World Youth Championships.
He is the fourth Indian to earn the Grandmaster title this year as the nation closes in on the three-figure mark.
Aaryan Varshney, Aarav Dengla, and Mayank Chakraborty had all earned their GM titles since the start of the year.
