Arpita Chatterjee to bring Gauhar Jaan’s story to life at News9 Global summit in Germany
Mumbai: Music lovers and history fans, this one’s for you! Veteran actress Arpita Chatterjee will perform a special solo concert at the News9 Global Summit in Germany on Friday, 22 November 2024. The show is a heartfelt tribute to Gauhar Jaan, India’s first recording star, who made history more than 100 years ago.
The concert will feature 10 songs in five languages. It will be divided into four parts; each one telling a story from Gauhar Jaan’s life. Known as the “Gramophone Girl of India,” Gauhar was a master of Hindustani classical styles like Thumri, Dadra, Khayal, and Kirtan. Arpita’s performance will bring her legacy to life, honouring an artist who set new standards in Indian music and challenged the norms of her time.
Relive Gauhar Jaan's Journey
The concert takes you back to the early 1900s, when Gauhar Jaan’s voice enchanted audiences across India. Born in 1873 as Eleen Angelina Yeoward, she rose from a humble background to become one of India’s most celebrated musicians. In 1902, she recorded her voice with German engineer Fred Gaisberg, becoming the first Indian artist to use the gramophone.
The performance will bring Gauhar Jaan’s incredible journey to life—her rise to fame, the struggles she faced, and her unbreakable spirit. Each part of the concert celebrates her talent and her courage as a woman who refused to be held back by the norms of her time.
If you enjoy classical music or want to know more about Gauhar’s inspiring story, this is your chance to experience history through an unforgettable show.
