Artemis-2 reached the farthest distance from Earth with humans, created history, broke Apollo’s record

New Delhi. Humans have once again reached close to the moon after more than 50 years. On Tuesday, April 7 at 12:15 am (IST), four astronauts of NASA’s Artemis-2 mission officially traveled around the Moon. Artemis-2 mission has created history.

This mission is considered a historic achievement for NASA, because the Orion spacecraft has now entered the deep space where the Apollo missions once dominated. Currently, the crew is in a very important phase, where they are facing the remote and rugged part of the Moon while testing the systems of the spacecraft.

  • What is Artemis-2 lunar flyby?

A lunar flyby occurs when a spacecraft passes by the Moon, but does not fire its engines to slow down and remain stable in its orbit.

Instead of lingering around the Moon, the Artemis-2 crew is using the Moon as a cosmic pivot point. This is possible with the help of free-return trajectory, a clever technique of celestial mechanics in which the spacecraft uses the Moon’s gravity like a natural slingshot.

In this, the powerful gravity of the Moon will act like an invisible bond, which will catch the capsule and rotate it in a tight U-turn on the far side.

Due to this speed, Orion will be pushed back towards Earth, without the need for a huge engine to start the return trip. This route is said to be extremely safe because it is based on immutable laws of physics, even if the main propulsion system fails completely.

Why is the far side of the Moon important?

When the crew orbits the part that is always away from Earth, they will see a landscape that will be completely different from what we see in the night sky. This happens due to tidal locking, in which the Moon rotates at the same speed as the Earth rotates.

The far side is full of craters and lacks the smooth, deep plains (called maria).

Although Artemis-2 is creating new records and passed Apollo 13’s distance milestone at 11:26 pm (IST) on Monday, it is still deeply connected to the past. The crew is carrying with them an original patch from Apollo 8, which reached the Moon in 1968.
