New Delhi. 32 years ago, on 06 December 1992, an incident took place in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, which left a deep mark on the social and political history of independent India. On the same day the structure of the disputed Babri Masjid was demolished. After this incident, communal tension and violence spread across the country, in which about 400 people lost their lives and a large amount of property was damaged.
The dream of building a grand Ram temple at the birthplace of Lord Ram in Ayodhya was filling enthusiasm among the people even at that time. In symbolic support of the same, a large number of people had gathered in Ayodhya on 6 December 1992. The day started normally, but by afternoon the crowd went out of control and attacked the disputed structure and within a few hours demolished all three domes of the Babri Masjid.
This incident deeply affected the country’s politics, society and communal relations. The pre-existing tensions escalated into violent confrontations and riots broke out in many cities. The fire that started from Ayodhya spread to Mumbai, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Kanpur, Bhopal and many other places.
Today, when the construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya is progressing rapidly, this date once again reminds of that important turning point in history.
