Former Home Minister Shivraj Patil passed away, breathed his last at home in Latur

Latur (Maharashtra). Former Union Home Minister and Congress leader Shivraj Patil died this morning at his residence in Latur. 90-year-old Patil breathed his last at his home. He was unwell for some time. A member of his family gave this information. He was born on October 12, 1935 in Chakur village in Latur district of Maharashtra. As a figure in Indian politics, he is remembered for his long and distinguished career spanning many important responsibilities in Parliament, the Central Government and state legislatures.

President Draupadi Murmu said Patil was a prominent public figure who held important positions such as Speaker of the Lok Sabha, Union Minister, Governor and Parliamentarian in his long public career. He expressed his heartfelt condolences to his family, well-wishers and followers.

Patil served as the 10th Speaker of the Lok Sabha and held several important positions in public life for more than four decades. Patil entered national politics in 1980. He was elected to the seventh Lok Sabha for the first time this year and remained a member for seven consecutive terms till 2004. During the period 1980–1990 he served on the Joint Committee on Salaries and Allowances of Members of Parliament. Later became its president. His tenure in Parliament is known for his extensive work in various ministries.

He served as Minister of State in several departments including Defence, Commerce, Science and Technology, Atomic Energy, Electronics, Space and Ocean Development, Bio-Technology, Personnel and Training, Public Grievances and Pensions, Administrative Reforms, Defense Production, Civil Aviation and Tourism. He was the Home Minister of the country from 2004 to 2008. Following the 26/11 Mumbai terrorist attacks, he resigned on November 30, 2008, taking moral responsibility for the security lapses. Between 2010 and 2015, Patil served as the Governor of Punjab and Administrator of the Union Territory of Chandigarh. Before shining in national politics, Patil was a member of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly twice.
