‘Peace’ bill related to nuclear energy sector introduced in Lok Sabha
New Delhi. A bill related to the nuclear energy sector was introduced in the Lok Sabha on Monday, the objective of which is to increase the share of nuclear energy in the total energy needs of India. The Bill seeks to encourage innovation in nuclear science and technology and extend its use to the non-power sector. It also aims to continuously monitor India’s capabilities towards security, defense measures and nuclear liability.
Union Minister Jitendra Singh today introduced the Sustainable Harnessing and Advancement of Nuclear Energy for Transforming India Bill, 2025 or the PEACE Bill (Sustainable Harnessing and Advancement of Nuclear Energy for Transforming India). It will be used in power generation, health, agriculture, industry, research, environment and innovation. Also, a strong regulatory framework for safe use and public welfare will be ensured.
The Act to be enacted by the Bill will replace the Atomic Energy Act, 1962 and the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Act, 2010. The proposed legislation aims to encourage participation of public and private players through public-private partnerships and joint ventures and promote the deployment of small modular reactors on a large scale.
