Abbott eyes comeback, hopes to play on Boxing Day after recovering from hamstring injury

Sydney. Sydney Sixers’ experienced fast bowler Sean Abbott has given a big update on his return after hamstring injury. Abbott has said that the last six weeks have been very “disappointing” for him, but now he is moving towards being fully ready to return to the Big Bash League (BBL) on Boxing Day.

Abbott, 33, suffered a hamstring injury during a Sheffield Shield match in early November. This injury ruled him out of the start of the Ashes series, despite being included in the Australian squad for the first Test. Before the injury, he had taken five wickets for New South Wales against Victoria.

On the same day, Australia’s senior fast bowler Josh Hazlewood also suffered a hamstring injury, ending his Ashes campaign. Abbott, along with Hazlewood, has completed rehab at the SCG and Cricket New South Wales’ Silverwater training base.

Speaking to Fox Cricket during the Sixers’ Sydney Smash win against Sydney Thunder, Abbott said, “I just have to tick a few little boxes and then hopefully I can make myself available for selection next week. It’s been a very disappointing time, but it’s all part of the game at the elite level. Now hopefully I can come out next week and do well.”

The Sydney Sixers, who had started the BBL season with two losses, recorded their first win by defeating the Thunder by 47 runs. The team’s next match is against Melbourne Stars at the SCG on Boxing Day.

The team’s young all-rounder Jack Edwards said that Abbott’s return would prove to be “huge” for the Sixers.

According to Edwards, “He is a wealth of experience and skill. His contribution in bowling, batting and fielding – all three are important. We have been missing him and it will be very exciting to see him in the field on Boxing Day.”

Abbott is the leading male bowler in Big Bash history with 175 wickets to his name. His strong comeback will not only be important for the Sixers, but can also strengthen his claim in the Australian team keeping in mind next year’s T20 World Cup to be held in India and Sri Lanka.
