Awami League leader dies while being taken on remand from jail

Dhaka. Bangladesh jail officials said that an Awami League leader died yesterday while being taken on remand from Ghazipur’s Kasimpur Central Jail. The deceased has been identified as Wasikur Rahman Babu, 43, of North Bashbaria village in Tungipara upazila of Gopalganj. He was the former president of Badda Thana Chhatra League and worked as the youth and sports secretary of Badda Thana Awami League.

According to The Daily Star report, Kashimpur Central Jail-2 Superintendent Al Mamun said that Babu died of a heart attack. According to jail officials, Babu was arrested in a case registered under the Anti-Terrorism Act for allegedly participating in a procession in the Panthapath area of ​​the capital on September 24. Three days later, he was transferred to Kashimpur Central Jail-2. Later a court granted three-day remand to the police.

Al Mamun said that yesterday afternoon a police team reached the jail to take Babu into custody for questioning. He was taken to the jail cell and asked to sit. “At that very moment, he suddenly fell from the chair and became unconscious,” the jail superintendent said. Babu was immediately taken to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital, Ghazipur, where doctors declared him brought dead.
