Secondary schools will open in UP from today, school timings changed

Lucknow.A major decision has been taken regarding the operation of secondary schools amid cold wave in Uttar Pradesh. All government and aided secondary schools of the state will reopen from January 2 (Friday). On the instructions of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, holiday was declared from December 29 to January 1, which is now ending.

In view of the outbreak of winter, a temporary change has been made in the school timings. Now secondary schools will operate from 10 am to 3 pm. Earlier the school timings were from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm, which has been reduced by one hour. The government has clarified that this order will be compulsorily applicable to all the secondary schools of the state.

At the same time, winter vacation has already been declared in primary schools. There will be a total holiday of 15 days in Basic Education Council schools from 31st December to 14th January. This holiday is already recorded in the annual holiday calendar of the Council. Private schools have different winter vacation dates, which are decided according to their academic calendar. However, in case of extreme cold, the District Magistrate can declare holiday at his level, which is mandatory for private schools also to follow.

Meanwhile, the Secondary Education Department has also released the school holiday calendar for the year 2026. According to the department, schools will remain closed for a total of 112 days including Sundays and summer holidays. 15 days have been earmarked for board examinations, while teaching and other educational activities will be conducted in schools for a total of 238 days. The first public holiday of the new year will be on January 3, on the occasion of Hazrat Ali’s birthday.

According to the released calendar, there will be a total of 28 days of public holidays in the year 2026. Summer vacations have been scheduled from May 21 to June 30. Apart from this, in special circumstances, the Principal will have the right to declare a local holiday of three days at his discretion, the information of which will be mandatory to be posted on the notice board of the school as well as given to the District Inspector of Schools (DIOS).

Female teachers will get leave on the day of Karva Chauth

In the instructions issued by Director of Secondary Education Dr. Mahendra Dev, it has also been said that married female teachers working in secondary schools will get leave on the day of Karva Chauth. Apart from this, on the basis of their application, women teachers can be given leave of any two days on festivals like Haritalika Teej/Hariyali Teej, Sankatha Chaturthi, Halshasthi, Lalai Chhath, Jiutiya Vrat and Ahoi Ashtami in a particular area.

Only local holidays and holiday table issued by DM will be valid.

It has also been made clear in the calendar that programs will be compulsorily organized in schools on national festivals. Condolence meetings will be held only in case of death of a teacher, employee or student associated with the school. Local holidays will be valid as per the holiday table issued by the District Magistrate. Apart from this, seminars of at least one hour will be organized in schools on the birth anniversaries of great men, revolutionaries of the freedom movement and social reformers. If there is a holiday on the respective day, it will be mandatory to organize the program on the next working day.
