BNP flag in Bangladesh, Tariq Rahman can become the new Prime Minister

Dhaka. Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) alliance has hoisted the flag in the 13th parliamentary elections of Bangladesh. BNP, which was out of power in the country for almost two decades, has performed brilliantly. BNP leader Tariq Rahman is receiving congratulatory messages from all over the world for this big victory, as there is a strong possibility of him becoming the Prime Minister. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given him credit for this victory.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with heads of state of many countries of the world have expressed happiness over the excellent performance of BNP in the elections. For this victory, he spoke to BNP President Tariq Rehman on phone on Friday and congratulated him on the victory in the parliamentary elections held in the country.

The Prime Minister shared this information in an ex-post and said that he extended his good wishes and support to the efforts of the BNP President to fulfill the aspirations of the people of Bangladesh. Also reiterated India’s continued commitment to peace, progress and prosperity of the people of both the countries, as two close neighbors with deep historical and cultural ties.

According to Dhaka Tribune, in this election, BNP alliance has won 216 seats, Jamaat alliance has won 76 seats, Swatantra and others have won 7 seats. The dream of fundamentalist Jamaat-e-Islami to come to power has been shattered. Voters rejected the party of the student leader who brought down Sheikh Hasina’s government. Deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League was barred from contesting the elections this time. Apart from Gopalganj, which was once the stronghold of Awami League, BNP has got a resounding victory in Khulna, Sylhet, Chittagong, Thakurganj.

According to Bangladesh’s leading newspaper Prothom Alo, unofficial results of 297 out of 299 seats in Parliament have been revealed. Of these, BNP and its allies have won 212 seats, Jamaat-e-Islami and its allies have won 77 seats, Islami Andolan Bangladesh one, Swatantra and others have won seven seats. Till now the account of National Party has not been opened.

Tariq Rehman is the son of former President Zia-ur-Rehman and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. After nearly 17 years in exile, Tariq, wife Zubaida Rehman and daughter returned to Bangladesh from London on December 25 last year. He was given an unprecedented welcome in Dhaka. After landing at the airport, he went straight to the hospital to meet his ailing mother and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. Khaleda died on 30 December. Election analysts are describing mother’s death as a wave of sympathy for the victory in this election.

Ruhul Amin Malik, Director of Public Relations Department of Bangladesh Election Commission, in a brief statement at around 11:30 am today informed that 59.44 percent of the total registered voters exercised their franchise in the 13th parliamentary election and national referendum held on Thursday.

On allegations of delay in election results, Commission officials argued that this was due to lack of correct information to include Dak Mitras in most of the constituencies. It took time to gather complete information. The hasty release of figures could have caused confusion. The final voting percentage (59.44 percent) could be confirmed only after the counting of votes was completed.
