We will have to develop sixth generation fighter engines: Defense Minister Rajnath Singh
New Delhi. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh today said that we will have to look towards the future as the plan to make fighter jet engines has not yet come to fruition in India. Now we cannot be limited to just the 5th generation engine, as this is the need of the hour. We also need to start developing 6th generation advanced technologies as soon as possible.
Technology is changing in the world, use of Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and new materials is increasing, we have to stay ahead in them. The Defense Minister was addressing a program of the Gas Turbine Research Establishment in Bengaluru on Monday. He said that civil aviation will expand even more rapidly in the coming times.
India is one of the fastest growing aviation markets in the world. In such a situation, the experiments being done in the field of civil aviation will prove directly useful in future. When we talk about research and engine development in the defense sector, its importance is not limited to military use only. The greatest importance of any complex technology lies in its far-reaching consequences.
The Defense Minister told the scientists associated with the aviation sector that the technology you are developing now for fighter planes can bring a revolution in the world of civil aviation tomorrow. The high temperature tolerant composite materials you are making can also be used in power plants or spaceships. He said that if it is taking 25 years to develop an engine, then the current situation of India, our strategic needs and our ambitions are such that you should assume that your 20 years have already ended and now only 5 years are left with you. This is not a shock or sudden thing, it is a challenge. We have to do in just 5 years what other countries do in 20 years.
Rajnath Singh said that currently a joint study is being conducted with Britain for aero engine development, which is a good initiative. Apart from this, we have also started work with France for aero engines under the National Aero Engine Mission. Both France and UK have been far ahead in aero engine technology. This collaboration with them will not only give us an opportunity to learn new technologies but will also help us understand the challenges they have faced over the last decades.
The Defense Minister said that we are passing through that historic period when the eyes of the entire world are towards India. All countries want to partner in our ‘Self-reliant India’ initiative. In such a situation, we have many options, so we have to take full advantage of these opportunities and strengthen our technical capabilities.
