Nepal ranks second in the world in terms of sales of electric vehicles.
Kathmandu. Nepal has secured second position in the world in terms of electric vehicle (EV) sales. Nepal ranked second among the countries with the highest sales of EV cars sold globally in the year 2025, while Europe’s Norway ranked first. Norway had achieved the first position in the world by selling 97 percent of EVs in total sales of new vehicles in 2025.
Nepal ranks second globally. According to estimates, EVs will account for 73 percent of total new car sales in Nepal in 2025, whereas in 2019 this figure was only 8 percent.
Comparing the share of EV sales between 2019 and 2025, Nepal has seen a sharp jump in the sales of EV cars in 2025 compared to 2019.
According to data from the International Energy Agency and Amber, EVs include both battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.
Nepal has recorded a 61 percent increase in EV sales compared to 2019. Finland and Denmark both achieved increases of more than 50 percent over the same period.
EV sales share in the United States in 2025 is expected to be 10 percent, which is equivalent to about 16 lakh units. Other markets in Europe have also seen significant growth in EV sales.
EV sales were up 43 percent in Belgium, 56 percent in the Netherlands, 37 percent in Portugal and 33 percent in the United Kingdom – representing significant growth compared to 2019 compared to other countries.
