Nepal: Curfew order issued after clash between Hindu Muslim community

Kathmandu. The dispute between two communities in Sangarh village of Gaur municipality in Rautahat district in Madhesh province of Nepal has taken a serious turn and has not been resolved even after three days. The incident that started as a minor dispute escalated into arson and vandalism on Thursday night.

According to police, the dispute arose over music played during a marriage ceremony. The situation turned tense when music was played during night prayers in a nearby mosque, leading to heated arguments and some people were allegedly assaulted.

There was news of stone pelting again between the two sides on Friday morning, which increased the tension further. The local administration says that the unrest has gradually spread to other nearby areas as well.

Meanwhile, District Administration Office, Rautahat has imposed prohibitory orders in some areas of Gaur-6 in view of the worsening situation. According to the information issued by the Chief District Officer, to maintain law and order, meetings, processions, rallies, dharna, sloganeering and similar activities have been banned till further orders.

It has been said in the information that there will be a ban on gathering of more than five people in the designated area and demonstrations or inciting activities will be prohibited. The administration has clarified that prohibitory order has been imposed in sensitive places of Gaur municipality and legal action will be taken against those violating the order.

Authorities have appealed to local residents to maintain peace and not pay heed to or spread rumours. Security arrangements have been tightened in the area.
