Italian cricket shaken by sexual harassment allegations, female coordinator suspended

New Delhi. A few days after their historic debut in the T-20 World Cup, a big controversy broke out in Italy cricket when a player of the women’s team accused women’s cricket coordinator Prabhat Ekneligoda of sexual harassment.

Following these allegations, the Italian Cricket Board Federazione Cricket Italiana (FCRI) has suspended Prabhat Ekneligoda. The official statement issued by FCRI on Tuesday said that the allegations are being investigated by the Federal Prosecutor’s Office.

According to the statement, the President of the Federation, as part of her institutional obligations during the year 2025, ordered the precautionary suspension of the concerned officer from all Federal responsibilities and activities with immediate effect.

“This decision has been taken as a precautionary measure pending a detailed and final review of the circumstances. The aim is to prevent any kind of speculation, maintain the dignity of the sporting environment and ensure that the facts are investigated at the appropriate forum with respect for individuals, due process and presumption of innocence,” the statement said.

According to media reports, Prabhat Ekneligoda’s lawyer has denied the allegations, saying that there could be “other motives” behind these allegations.

The board’s media manager Rakbir Hasan confirmed that Prabhat Ekneligoda had accompanied board president Maria Lorena Haz Paz on a trip to India and Sri Lanka during the T20 World Cup, although he had no official responsibilities.

The Board has also clarified that the proceedings before the Federal Prosecutor’s Office are ongoing and the process of investigation and assessment required under the sporting regulations is underway.
