Mamata Banerjee targets Election Commission, inaugurates many projects
Kolkata. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday inaugurated several development projects in Kolkata and also launched a scathing attack on the Election Commission of India. He alleged that the Election Commission is secretly trying to remove the names of 1.20 crore genuine voters from the voter list.
Addressing the meeting organized after the inauguration of ‘Man Stambh’, the sacred monument of the Jain community in Bhawanipur, South Kolkata, Mamata Banerjee said that democracy is going through a serious crisis. They alleged that even the orders of the Supreme Court were not being followed and names of genuine voters were being removed despite submission of all necessary documents.
The Trinamool Congress chief said that this is not a fight just for the supporters of any one party, but for democratic rights. He said that whether the names are of Trinamool Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Communist Party of India (Marxist) or Congress supporters, playing with the constitutional rights of any citizen is not acceptable.
She said she is praying for justice and appeals to protect people from unnecessary harassment. Describing his assembly constituency Bhawanipur as ‘mini India’, the Chief Minister said that people of different religions and communities have been living harmoniously here for generations.
The participation of every community in all the festivals like Durga Puja, Christmas and Eid reflects the tradition and culture of the region. He said that the religious teachings on the Mann Stambh are inscribed in four languages, which makes its inclusive spirit clear. The Chief Minister said that the state government has started various projects at a cost of about Rs 850 crore.
These include maternal and child centers at different locations, a 100-bed hospital at Furfura Sharif in Hooghly district and a 50-bed critical care center at Alipurduar Hospital in North Bengal. He said that these projects will fulfill the long standing demands of the general public.
Apart from this he flagged off more than 100 CNG buses and motorcycles equipped with fire fighting equipment. 20 solar powered high mast lamps were inaugurated and a hostel for construction workers built at a cost of Rs 15 crore was virtually inaugurated.
The Chief Minister launched the distribution of 12 lakh bicycles to class 12 students under the ‘Sabuj Sathi’ scheme. From the year 2015-16 till now, more than 1.50 crore bicycles have been distributed to the students of class 9th to 12th of the state, on which the state government has spent approximately Rs. five thousand crores.
Laying the foundation stone of a cultural center for minority communities in New Town to be built at a cost of Rs 30 crore, Mamata Banerjee said that this place will be available for cultural programs of all minority communities. He announced a donation of Rs 1 crore from his MLA Area Development Fund. Also inaugurated a gate outside Sant Kutiya Gurudwara.
