9 killed, 18 injured after security personnel shot at US Consulate in Karachi

Islamabad. People in different parts of Pakistan have been enraged by the news of the death of its supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in the joint attack by Israel and America on Iran on Sunday morning. Thousands of protesters gathered outside the US Consulate in Karachi today and raised slogans. After the clash, American security personnel opened fire, killing 9 people and injuring 18 others. The injured have been admitted to different hospitals. Sindh Home Minister has called for a report of the incident from the police.

At least nine people were killed and 18 others injured during clashes between protesters protesting the US and Israeli strikes outside the US Consulate in Karachi this afternoon and police, Ziya TV quoted government hospital officials as saying. Hospital officials have confirmed this.

Regarding the incident, the US Embassy in Islamabad has issued a statement on social media platforms and appealed to its citizens to remain alert. It said, ‘We are monitoring reports of ongoing protests in front of the US Consulates in Karachi and Lahore. We are also keeping an eye on the call for demonstrations in front of the US Embassy in Islamabad and the Consulate in Peshawar. US citizens living in Pakistan are advised to monitor local news and exercise caution and avoid crowded places, with good personal protection measures in place.

Earlier, fierce protesters accused America and Israel of spreading instability in the Middle East. The protesters broke the barricades while shouting slogans. The mob targeted American symbols and set fire to parts of the embassy compound.

According to Edhi Ambulance Service, 06 bodies and 10 injured were initially taken to Civil Hospital Karachi from MT Khan Road. Officials at the hospital’s trauma center later confirmed that 7 bodies were brought to the hospital along with 18 injured people. Hospital officials said the affected people were injured due to firing, lathicharge and stampede.

According to Dr. Sabir Memon, Head of Trauma Center of Civil Hospital Karachi, till now 8 dead bodies have been brought to the hospital, while 20 injured are undergoing treatment. Later, another person who was seriously injured died.

The protesters gathered outside the US Consulate, threw stones and tried to move forward, following which security personnel opened fire after using force to disperse the crowd.

Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hasan Lanzar has sought a report on the incident from Additional IG Karachi. In a statement he said that no one will be allowed to take the law into their own hands. Lanzar directed to increase security at sensitive places across the province.
