Colombian military plane crashes in Amazon region, 66 killed

Bogota (Colombia). At least 66 people died in a military plane crash in the South American country of Colombia. The accident occurred when the Lockheed Martin Hercules C-130 aircraft was carrying 114 passengers and 11 crew members.

Colombian Air Force Commander Fernando Silva confirmed the accident and said that the cause of the accident is being investigated. Defense Minister Pedro Anulfo Sanchez expressed deep condolences over the incident and appealed to the public not to believe unconfirmed reports. It was reported that the plane had taken off from an airport in the southern Amazon region of the country, which is located near the Peruvian border. During flight it crashed over dense forests. According to local reports, the accident occurred at some distance from an urban area.

President Gustavo Petro expressed displeasure over the delay in modernization of the army after this incident and said that the safety of soldiers should be the top priority.
