Illegal kidney transplant racket busted in Kanpur, three private hospitals raided, more than 50 hospitals on radar
Kanpur. Illegal kidney transplant racket has been exposed in the city, which has created panic in the health department and police department. Names of three private hospitals have come to light in the case, one of which was operating without registration. This information came to light when a joint team of police and health department reached the spot for investigation.
On Monday, on the information of the police, the health department team, which included ACMO Dr. Ramit Rastogi and Kalyanpur CHC in-charge Dr. Rajesh Singh, inspected the suspected hospitals. Many shocking facts came to light during the investigation. According to officials, these hospitals did not even have the necessary facilities for complex surgeries like kidney transplant, yet illegal operations were being carried out here.
Preliminary investigation has revealed that specialist doctors were called from Lucknow, Mumbai and Delhi for kidney transplant. This team included nephrologists, transplant surgeons, urologists and other specialists. The Health Department is now also identifying such doctors who may be associated with this racket.
Used to make the poor victims, used to deal in lakhs
Investigation revealed that brokers used to buy kidneys from economically weaker people by luring them with money and sold them to needy patients at many times the price. In one case, it has been revealed that after buying a kidney from a youth of Uttarakhand for about Rs 10 lakh, he sold it for more than Rs 90 lakh. Only Rs 9.5 lakh was given to the victim, there was delay in getting the remaining amount, after which he complained to the police.
Donor found in closed hospital, many detained
Police found a kidney donor admitted in a closed hospital located at Awas Vikas, who was immediately shifted to a government hospital. Apart from this, the police have detained about 10 people including a broker, hospital operator, doctor couple and started questioning them.
Raids created panic, hospitals switched off lights
After the kidney racket was exposed, the police raided many hospitals in Kalyanpur area. This created a stir among legal and illegal hospital operators. Many hospitals turned off their lights and tried to hide the movements of patients.
More than 50 hospitals under investigation
According to the Health Department, more than 50 hospitals have been put on the radar in this matter and they are being thoroughly investigated. Officials say that no person involved in this racket will be spared. It is noteworthy that about 22 years ago, a similar case of kidney buying and selling had come to light in Kanpur, which was investigated by CBCID. Once again, due to the exposure of such racket, serious questions are being raised on the health system.
