UPI made a record of 22.64 billion transactions in the country in March: DFS
New Delhi. The number of transactions through Unified Payment System (UPI) in the country reached a record level of 22.64 billion in the month of March. The Department of Financial Services (DFS) of the Finance Ministry has given this information.
“There have been 22.64 billion transactions through UPI in March 2026,” the Department of Financial Services (DFS) told XPost on Thursday. Thank you to India for adopting digital payments and taking this revolution forward. Let us continue this journey of changing the way we transact.”
DFS said that in terms of numbers, there were 22.64 billion transactions this month, compared to 18.3 billion in the same period last year, which represents an increase of 24 percent. At the same time, the number of UPI transactions in February was 20.39 billion.
According to the Department of Financial Services, UPI transactions are secure and easy to use by following the recently released RBI ‘two-level verification’ rule. In this, the first verification is the mobile number linked to the bank, while the second aspect is the PIN of the UPI account. This speeds up transactions and prevents unauthorized access.
DFS said that today UPI’s share in the total digital transactions in India is 85 percent. Its influence transcends national boundaries and accounts for nearly 50 percent of real-time digital payments globally.
It is noteworthy that UPI is already operational in seven countries including UAE, Singapore, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, France and Mauritius. It has been started in France and this is the first step of UPI in Europe.
