Trump gives 48-hour ultimatum to Iran, questions raised on NATO too
Washington. US President Donald Trump has given Iran a 48-hour ultimatum to open the Strait of Hormuz. He warned that if this waterway is not opened within the stipulated time, America can take strict action.
Posting on his social media platform ‘Truth Social’, Trump said that time is fast running out. He reminded that earlier Iran was given 10 days time, but now this period has been reduced to 48 hours.
The Strait of Hormuz is a vital route for global oil supplies, where any blockage can have a major impact on the international market. Trump indicated that if Iran delayed opening this route, it could face serious consequences.
Along with this, Trump also launched a sharp attack on NATO. He termed the alliance as “weak” and “untrustworthy”, saying that it has failed to fulfill its responsibilities effectively in the current situation.
Trump also indicated that the US may review its relationship with NATO. He expressed displeasure over the stance of some allied countries during the current tension related to Iran.
Experts believe that these statements of Trump may further increase the ongoing tension in West Asia, and it is also likely to have a wide-ranging impact on international diplomacy.
