Countries around the world should not make America and China their ‘vassals’: Emmanuel Macron
Paris. French President Emmanuel Macron has appealed to like-minded countries to form a “freedom alliance” while giving a big message on the global stage. Following recent public differences with US President Donald Trump, Macron called for countries not to become “vassals” of any one power amid US “uncertainty” and China’s growing influence. In a speech in Seoul, South Korea, he called for a new global order based on shared values such as international law, democracy and climate, an important gesture amid current geopolitical instability.
According to Russia’s state-controlled international news television network Russia Today (RT), French President Emmanuel Macron has appealed to countries around the world not to become “vassals” of the US or China, following a public dispute with US President Donald Trump over the ongoing war in West Asia and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
During a visit to Seoul on Friday, the French president urged other countries, including South Korea, Japan, Brazil, India, Australia and Canada, to form a “freedom alliance” based on shared commitments on issues such as international law, democracy and climate change.
In his speech at Yonsei University, French President Macron said that for decades, we had a so-called stability, which was based on this international order and some certainties that we had. Now it is fluctuating. We should not remain mere mute spectators in this new chaos. We have to create a new system.
He further said that our aim is not to become vassals of two hegemonic powers. We do not want to depend on China’s dominance, nor do we want to be overly sensitive to America’s uncertainty.
Emmanuel Macron has refused to support a US-Israeli war against Iran in West Asia. He also hit back at Trump, who had mocked NATO as a “paper tiger” after its European members ignored his appeal to open the Strait of Hormuz.
Referring to America’s past and present interventions in West Asia, French President Emmanuel Macron said that I do not think we will be able to fix this situation only through bombings or military operations.
France joined Russia and China in opposing a UN Security Council resolution that would have authorized military action against Iran in Hormuz, RT reported, quoting the New York Times. Voting on this proposal was originally scheduled for Friday, which has now been postponed.
French President Emmanuel Macron has significantly increased France’s defense spending in recent years, with a particular focus on missile, drone and submarine capabilities. Last month he said France could expand its nuclear security umbrella to protect Germany and other European countries.
