There is a long history of conflict between Lebanon and Israel. In fact, in 1948, Lebanon, along with other Arab countries, had opposed the formation of Israel. Since then, no formal peace agreement has been reached between the two countries. In the 1970s, the Palestine Liberation Organization made southern Lebanon its base and started attacks on Israel. In response, Israel launched Operation Litani in 1978 and attacked southern Lebanon.
The first Lebanon war began in 1982. Israel launched a major attack on Lebanon to completely drive out the Palestine Liberation Organization. Israeli forces reached Beirut. During this period, Iran-backed terrorist organization Hezbollah emerged in opposition to Israel. In 2000 Israel withdrew its forces from the areas it occupied in southern Lebanon, but tensions remained over disputed areas such as Shebaa Farms.
In 2006, Hezbollah kidnapped two Israeli soldiers. After this incident a fierce war continued for 34 days. The war ended with a ceasefire following UN Resolution 1701. In October 2023, Hezbollah began rocket attacks on northern Israel in support of Hamas. In response, Israel intensified air strikes and limited ground operations in Lebanon.
At the end of 2024, Israel launched massive attacks on Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon. Last month in April this year, a brief ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon came into effect after US mediation. Israel considers Hezbollah’s presence in Lebanon a threat to its existence and wants to disarm it. It is continuously attacking Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.
