APEDA exported the first consignment of 20 metric tons of honey to America.
New Delhi. Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) on Saturday dispatched the first consignment of 20 metric tonnes of honey from Baksa district of Assam for export to the US, a historic achievement for the North-Eastern region.
In a major and significant achievement towards diversifying India’s agricultural exports and taking forward the ‘One District One Product’ (ODOP) initiative, the first consignment of ODOP honey from Baksa, an ‘Aspirational District’ of Assam, was dispatched to the USA through the initiative of APEDA, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry said in a statement.
The ministry said that this first consignment of 20 metric tonnes of honey was exported by M/s Salt Range Foods Private Limited, Assam, an APEDA-registered exporter from the North-Eastern region.
This initiative by APEDA reflects the growing global demand for high-quality, organic honey from the North-Eastern region of India, thereby increasing the income of local farmers and promoting sustainable agriculture.
The Union Commerce and Industry Minister has written in a post on ‘X’ that the export of ODOP honey to the US for the first time from Baksa district of Assam is a global proof of the agricultural potential of North-East India and the hard work of the farmers.
Piyush Goyal further said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘One District One Product’ vision and the efforts of Apedadoc have provided better prices, global market and a new flight of self-reliance to the local beekeepers.
He said that this is not just export, but a historic achievement for rural prosperity and giving global recognition to ‘Vocal for Local’.
It is noteworthy that Assam has immense potential for honey production, the main reason for which is its rich biodiversity, abundant forest resources and old tradition of beekeeping.
