Wolfsburg eliminated after 29 years, Paderborn recorded historic victory in extra time
Paderborn. German football club Wolfsburg is out of the Bundesliga after 29 years. Paderborn secured a place in the top league by winning 2-1 in extra time in the second leg of the relegation playoff played on Monday.
The first match between the two teams was a goalless draw. In the second leg, Wolfsburg took the lead in the third minute through Dejanan Pejcinovic, but Paderborn equalized through Filip Bilbieja seven minutes into the first half.
Wolfsburg’s troubles increased when Joachim Mehle was shown a red card just 11 minutes after the opening goal. He received two yellow cards within three minutes and the team had to play almost the entire match with 10 players.
After this, Paderborn made continuous attacks, but Wolfsburg goalkeeper Kamil Grabara made several brilliant saves to keep the team in the match. The match reached extra time after the score remained 1-1 at the stipulated time.
In the 10th minute of extra time, Laurin Kurda scored a brilliant volley goal to give Paderborn a decisive lead. This goal led to the team’s historic victory and Paderborn entered the Bundesliga for the third time.
Wolfsburg reached the Bundesliga for the first time in 1997 and have been a consistent part of the top league since then. The club won the Bundesliga title in 2009 and the German Cup in 2015.
Paderborn had entered the Bundesliga twice before, but on both occasions the team was eliminated in the very next season.
