New Delhi: To further strengthen India’s long-range air defense capability, the fourth squadron of S-400 ‘Sudarshan’ air defense system has reached India from Russia. According to defense sources, this system was brought to India by ship a few days ago and will soon be deployed in an important operational area. The S-400 ‘Sudarshan’ system is part of the defense agreement signed between India and Russia in 2018. Under this agreement, India is to get a total of 5 S-400 squadrons. Of these, 3 squadrons had reached India two years ago, while the supply of the remaining 2 squadrons was delayed due to the Russia-Ukraine war.
The fifth squadron will arrive in a few months
Defense sources say the fifth and final squadron of the S-400 system is also expected to reach India in the next few months. With this, the entire prescribed number of this state-of-the-art air defense system will be available to India. Meanwhile, the Defense Acquisition Council (DAC) has also approved the proposal to purchase 5 additional squadrons of S-400. This will further strengthen India’s air security system.
Strength was shown in ‘Operation Sindoor’
S-400 ‘Sudarshan’ played a big role in giving a significant lead to the Indian Air Force during the recent ‘Operation Sindoor’. According to defense sources, the system effectively challenged the capabilities of the Pakistan Air Force. According to reports, during the operation, the S-400 shot down a very important surveillance aircraft of the Pakistan Air Force flying at a distance of more than 300 kilometers. It is believed to be the longest-range successful operation recorded by a surface-to-air missile system.
Work is also going on on indigenous option
India does not want to depend only on foreign systems. In the same direction, the country is also working on an indigenous air defense program called ‘Project Kusha’. The objective of this project is to develop an Indian air defense system that can target enemy aircraft, missiles and drones at long ranges like the S-400. Indian defense company ‘Solar Industries’ is involved in this project as the development and production partner.

The S-400 Triumph, codenamed ‘Sudarshan’ in India, is one of the world’s most modern long-range air defense systems developed by Russia. It has the capability to identify, track and destroy multiple air threats simultaneously. Its powerful radar system can detect targets hundreds of kilometers away and can engage multiple targets simultaneously.
