Matteo Arnoldi reaches semi-finals for the first time in French Open 2026, Berrettini out with injury
Paris. Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi is assured of playing the first Grand Slam semi-final of his career in the French Open 2026. In the quarterfinals played on Wednesday, he got the advantage of compatriot Matteo Berrettini withdrawing from the match due to injury.
At the time of the match, Arnoldi was leading 7-5, 5-2, when Berrettini decided to leave the match due to injury. He felt hip discomfort during the early games of the second set and sought medical attention.
After this, during the rest, on the advice of his allies, he withdrew from the competition. Arnoldi, who is ranked 104th in the world rankings, has shown great fight in this tournament. While reaching the quarterfinals, he spent a total of 17 hours and 42 minutes on the court.
Now he will face another Italian player Flavio Coboli in the semi-finals. With this it has been decided that an Italian player will definitely reach the men’s singles final to be held on Sunday.
The Italians have produced a stellar performance after world number one and last year’s runner-up Yannick Sinner made an early exit.
After the match, Arnoldi said, “It is a difficult situation. We both played very long matches, so it was not easy to play at the best level. But no one wants a player’s tournament to end like this.”
He further said, “Tennis is continuously progressing in Italy. I hope that Berrettini will be back fit soon. The grass court season is going to start soon and he will prove to be a strong player there.” Arnoldi also admitted that he is feeling tired, but is trying to give his best in every match.
