Siwan: Smuggling of intoxicating cough syrup busted, one accused arrested, investigation started
Siwan. The Excise Department team on Wednesday took major action against drug smuggling and recovered a huge quantity of banned cough syrup containing codeine phosphate from Guthni check post located in Guthni police station area.
A smuggler has been arrested during the operation, while the investigation has been intensified to trace the entire network. Based on secret information, the team of excise department investigated a DCM truck of Gujarat number.
During investigation, the driver of the vehicle, seeing the team, stopped the truck and tried to run away, but the soldiers chased him away and caught him. Upon search, 1530 liters of cough syrup containing codeine phosphate, hidden inside the tires of the truck, was recovered.
According to the excise department, the recovered syrup falls in the banned category, which is used for intoxicating liquor and is a controlled substance under the NDPS Act. The estimated market value of the seized syrup is estimated to be around Rs 4.59 lakh.
The arrested smuggler has been identified as Dilip Kumar Pandey, son of Chandrabhushan Pandey, resident of Vatva Navjeevan, Vatva police station area of Ahmedabad district of Gujarat. After interrogation he was sent to judicial custody.
During interrogation, the accused revealed that banned cough syrup was being brought from Gujarat and delivered to Purnia. He told that it was to be delivered to Jai Guru Medical Agency located in Purnia. The accused also admitted that he had smuggled such consignments before also.
According to officials of the excise department, many important information has been found during the inquiry. The smuggler has given information about the owner of the consignment, the person taking delivery and other members associated with the gang.
On the basis of these clues, the department has now started preparations to demolish the entire network. According to sources, raids can also be conducted in Purnia soon to arrest other members of the gang.

Product Superintendent Vipin Kumar said that a large consignment of syrup containing banned codeine has been recovered from Guthni check post. A smuggler has been arrested in the case and sent to judicial custody. Further action is underway to identify and arrest other gang members.
