Shubman Gill’s big jump in ICC rankings, reached second place among ODI batsmen

New Delhi. Indian captain Shubman Gill has jumped three places to become second in the latest ICC ODI batting rankings.

At the same time, New Zealand fast bowler Matt Henry has equaled the top Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah in the ranking of Test bowlers on the basis of his excellent performance against England. Both have 870-870 rating points.

Gill got a big benefit from his excellent performance in the recently concluded three-match ODI series against Afghanistan. He played brilliant innings of 84 and 154 runs in the first two matches, while he did not get a chance to bat in the third match.

In the latest rankings, Gill is now just 24 rating points behind top-ranked New Zealand’s Darryl Mitchell. Indian batsman Virat Kohli could not play the Afghanistan series due to a hamstring injury, due to which he slipped one place to third position. Rohit Sharma remains at fourth position.

Apart from this, Shreyas Iyer has moved up one place to 14th position, while KL Rahul has slipped two places to 11th position. Ishan Kishan has achieved 43rd position with a big jump of 21 places.

Indian players have also benefited in the ranking of bowlers. Arshdeep Singh has moved up 16 places to 22nd, Prasidh Krishna has jumped 34 places to 58th and Washington Sundar has moved up 17 places to joint 71st.

On the other hand, New Zealand’s fast bowler Matt Henry created history by taking 11 wickets in the second test against England. Henry equaled Jasprit Bumrah by achieving the top position in the rankings for Test bowlers.

According to the ICC, Henry has become only the third New Zealand player to top the rankings for Test bowlers. Earlier this feat was achieved by Jack Cowie (1947) and great all-rounder Richard Hadlee (1984-1990).

A New Zealand fast bowler has attained the number one position in the Test bowling rankings after 36 years. England’s acting captain Joe Root has again regained the number one position in the rankings for Test batsmen by jumping two places.
