West Indies defeated Sri Lanka by an innings and 217 runs with Aamir Jangu’s double century and Roach’s 300 Test wickets.
Antigua. West Indies defeated Sri Lanka by a huge margin of an innings and 217 runs in the first Test to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. On Sunday, the fourth day of the match, the West Indies fast bowlers performed brilliantly and restricted Sri Lanka to just 101 runs in the second innings.
Earlier, Sri Lanka had scored 308 runs in the first innings. Captain Dhananjay de Silva played a brilliant century of 120 runs, while Dinesh Chandimal contributed 54 runs and Nuwandi Fernando contributed 84 runs. Justin Greaves took three wickets for West Indies.
In reply, West Indies displayed a brilliant batting performance and declared the innings at 626/9. Wicketkeeper batsman Aamir Jangu scored the first double century of his career and scored 233 runs, while captain Roston Chase played a brilliant inning of 194 runs. Thanks to the big innings of both the batsmen, the host team achieved a lead of 318 runs.
On the fourth day, Sri Lanka started playing at 15/1, but had a very bad start. In the very first over of the day, Kemar Roach got Nishan Madushka out LBW, while three balls later, Jaden Seales sent nightwatchman Kasun Rajitha caught in the slip to the pavilion.
Kamindu Mendis and Dinesh Chandimal tried to handle the innings, but Kamindu Mendis was bowled by Shamar Joseph. After this, captain Dhananjay de Silva, who scored a century in the first innings, also returned after being out LBW. Sri Lanka soon lost half the team.
Kemar Roach also increased Sri Lanka’s problems by bowling Kusal Mendis. The game was stopped for some time due to rain, but as soon as the game started, the West Indies bowlers maintained the pressure.
After lunch, Roach completely won the match by taking the wickets of Dinesh Chandimal and Milan Ratnayake in consecutive balls. After this, Roach completed his 300 wickets in Test cricket by bowling Asita Fernando. He became only the fifth West Indies bowler to reach this feat.
Jaden Seales took the last wicket to end Sri Lanka’s innings and give West Indies their first Test win under captain Roston Chase. The second and final Test between the two teams will be played on the same ground from Friday.
