FIFA World Cup 2026: Brazil’s star player Neymar Jr. retires from international football

New York. Brazil’s great footballer and the national team’s highest goalscorer Neymar Jr. has announced his retirement from international football. He took this decision after Brazil’s 1-2 defeat against Norway in the pre-quarterfinals of the FIFA World Cup 2026.

In the match played at the MetLife Stadium, Neymar scored Brazil’s only goal on a penalty in the 10th minute of injury time, but his team could not avoid defeat and was out of the World Cup.

After the match, an emotional Neymar told reporters, “I tried my best. I did everything possible. My journey started at this MetLife Stadium and is ending here. Now everything is finished.”

Neymar scored 80 goals and also recorded 59 assists in 130 international matches in his career for Brazil. He is the highest goalscorer in Brazilian history.

Before the World Cup, questions were being raised about his fitness, but head coach Carlo Ancelotti expressed confidence in him and included him in the 26-man World Cup squad.

Neymar won the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup title with Brazil. Apart from this, he also played an important role in winning the football gold medal for Brazil for the first time in the 2016 Rio Olympics.

With Neymar’s retirement, a golden chapter of Brazilian football came to an end. The record of scoring most goals for the national team will always be in his name.
