9 killed in trawler accident that capsized in the sea, search continues for 6 fishermen; Administration increased rescue operation

South 24 Parganas. Fishing trawler ‘Ma Kali’, missing off the coast of Bakkhali in South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, has been recovered.

Bodies of four more fishermen were recovered from the trawler late on Sunday night. Earlier on Sunday, five bodies were found. In this way, the number of deaths in the accident has increased to nine, while six fishermen are still missing. They are being searched.

Administrative officials and fishermen conducted an intensive search operation in and around the trawler throughout the night. It is feared that some fishermen might have been swept away in the high waves of the sea at the time of the accident. Information about the incident has been given to the Chief Minister and further action is being considered.

Minister of State for Sundarban Development Department Dipankar Jana reached the spot on Sunday night. He monitored the relief and rescue operation going on throughout the night at Sitarampur Ghat in Govardhanpur Coastal Police Station area of ​​Patharpratima.

During this, representatives of Kakdweep Department Administration, Sundarban Police, Govardhanpur Coastal Police Station, Forest Department and fishermen organizations were also present.

According to the information, ‘Ma Kali’ trawler had gone out into the sea for fishing from Shankarpur port of Digha on July 2. Contact with the trawler was lost after July 5. After this, police, coast guard, navy, forest department and fishermen organizations jointly started the search operation.

It is noteworthy that last Sunday, the trawler was found in an upside down position in Bagherchar area near Chulkathi forest, about 35 km from Bakkhali coast of South 24 Parganas.

After the joint operation, the trawler was brought to Sitarampur Ghat, where during the search, bodies of nine fishermen were recovered one by one. At present the search for six missing fishermen is going on.
