Mumbai The risk of diabetes is increasing in Mumbai. Now children are also falling prey to Type-1 diabetes. Every year about 19 thousand new cases are coming up. More than 1,300 children suffering from type-1 diabetes are undergoing treatment at Wadia Hospital in Mumbai.
A new patient is being identified in Mumbai almost every five days. Experts say that with timely detection, regular insulin and constant monitoring, children can live a normal and healthy life. More than 1,200 children are undergoing regular follow-up at the pediatric endocrinology department of the hospital. A special diabetes clinic is organized here every week, where expert doctors, diabetes educators, nurses, dietitians and psychologists together provide treatment, diet, mental support and necessary information related to the disease to the children and their families.
According to Dr. Sudha Rao, Medical Director and Pediatric Endocrinologist of the hospital, Type-1 diabetes is not caused by wrong eating habits or lifestyle, but due to an autoimmune disease. In this, the body destroys the insulin producing cells, so the patient has to take insulin throughout his life. The treatment of a child costs Rs 70 to 90 thousand or more annually. Due to financial constraints, many families are forced to postpone treatment.
