IPL Auction 2026 Rules: Are There Any Restrictions on Left-Handers, Right-Handers or Overseas Players?

The IPL auction pool has no restrictions based on whether a player bats left-handed or right-handed. Franchises are free to pick any combination they want. The only regulatory limits apply to overseas players, both in the squad and on match day.

Each franchise can sign a maximum of eight overseas players in a squad of up to 25. On the field, the limit is tighter. Teams can play only four overseas players in the starting eleven for any match. This rule shapes auction strategy, often pushing franchises to prioritise versatile Indian players who allow greater flexibility in team balance.

The Impact Player rule adds another layer. If a team starts with four overseas players, the substitute must be Indian. If a side opts for fewer than four overseas starters, it can introduce an overseas Impact Player later, as long as the on-field overseas count never exceeds four.

These regulations make overseas slots some of the most valuable real estate in the league. Franchises tend to reserve them for high-impact roles such as top-order hitters, express pace, wrist-spin variety or specialist finishers.
