Northern Superchargers renamed Sunrisers Leeds for upcoming season of The Hundred

The Hundred franchise Northern Superchargers was on Monday renamed as Sunrisers Leeds. The Sun Group, which owns the Indian Premier League (IPL) team Sunrisers Hyderabad, had acquired a 100 per cent stake in the Yorkshire-based franchise in February last year.

“A new era begins. SunRisers is not just a team, it is family, it is emotion, it’s passion,” the franchise said in a video announcement posted on social media by its verified handle.

“Orange Army has always shown up in huge numbers with pure passion, from India to South Africa. It’s time to paint Headingley orange. We’re ready to go hard, we’re ready to go fearless. We’re ready to play with fire. The team is yours, Orange Army. Every wicket, every run and every record is for you,” Kavya Maran, owner of the franchise, said.

The Sun Group also owns the Sunrisers Eastern Cape team in SA20, South Africa’s franchise T20 tournament.

The Hundred has witnessed significant investment from IPL franchises. Lucknow Super Giants, owned by the RPSG Group, bought a 70 per cent stake in Manchester Originals, while Reliance Industries, owner of Mumbai Indians, has a 49 per cent stake in Oval Invincibles.

GMR Group, which owns Delhi Capitals, purchased 49 per cent stake in Southern Brave.
