BCCI keeping tabs on IPL 2026 preparations as West Asia conflict disrupts LPG supply chain
With the Indian Premier League (IPL) still a couple of weeks away, disruption in the supply of commercial LPG cylinders used by restaurants, hotels and food businesses has prompted the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to take note of the situation and explore contingency plans if required.
The IPL is scheduled to begin on March 28 and continue till May 31.
“It’s an evolving situation. We hope the situation will be under control by then (by March 28). But if this continues, we will have to look at options because this would not only impact the teams and players, but also the spectators.
“So we are keeping a close tab on the issue,” IPL Governing Council chairman Arun Dhumal told Sportstar.
Due to the ongoing conflict involving the United States of America, Israel and Iran escalating in West Asia, the supply of petroleum and LPG products has taken a hit.
Hotel Owners’ Associations in Bengaluru have indicated that they have LPG stocks for only a day or two, and around 20 per cent of hotels and restaurants have shut down in Mumbai due to the crisis so far.
If the disruption continues, the BCCI may be forced to take a call, as the situation could snowball beyond the league.
Earlier, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas directed oil refineries to increase LPG production and divert additional output towards domestic consumption.
“The ministry has prioritised domestic LPG supply to households and introduced a 25-day inter-booking period to prevent hoarding and black marketing. Non-domestic supplies from imported LPG are being prioritised for essential sectors such as hospitals and educational institutions,” the ministry said in a statement.
It added that a committee of three executive directors from oil marketing companies has been constituted to review representations for LPG supply to restaurants, hotels and other industries.
