GT vs CSK, IPL 2026: Chennai Super Kings crashes to heaviest defeat in terms of runs

Chennai Super Kings suffered the heaviest defeat in their IPL history after Gujarat Titans crushed them by a massive 89 runs in IPL 2026 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The humiliating loss officially knocked CSK out of the playoff race and marked one of the darkest nights in the franchise’s history.

The defeat surpassed CSK’s previous biggest loss margins in the IPL and exposed major weaknesses in both their batting and bowling departments. Gujarat Titans completely dominated the match from the start, with their top-order batters once again delivering a powerful performance.

Sai Sudharsan continued his sensational IPL 2026 form by smashing another half-century, making it his fifth consecutive fifty of the season. The young opener reached the milestone in just 35 balls and matched a major IPL record previously held by Virender Sehwag.

Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan built a strong opening partnership that gave Gujarat complete control of the innings early on. Jos Buttler then accelerated the scoring dramatically with a destructive 57 off only 27 balls, helping GT post a massive total and put CSK under enormous pressure.

Chennai’s response with the bat never truly got going. The team lost four key wickets inside the powerplay and struggled badly against Gujarat’s disciplined bowling attack. The batting collapse made the chase one-sided, with CSK unable to recover at any stage of the innings.

The loss also intensified criticism around Chennai’s disappointing IPL 2026 campaign under captain Ruturaj Gaikwad. After another season filled with inconsistent performances, CSK failed to qualify for the playoffs and ended their campaign under heavy pressure from fans and analysts.

For Gujarat Titans, however, the dominant win strengthened their push for a top-two finish in the IPL 2026 standings. The team has looked one of the most balanced sides of the tournament, with explosive batting performances and strong bowling depth making them serious title contenders this season.
