Born on 8 September 1933 in Sangli village of Maharashtra, Asha Bhosle’s father Pandit Dinanath Mangeshkar was associated with Marathi theatre. At the young age of nine, Asha Bhosle lost her father and taking up the financial responsibility of the family, Asha Bhosle and her sister Lata Mangeshkar started singing along with acting in films.
Asha Bhosle sang her first song in the year 1948…Sawan Aaya…in the film Chunariya. At the age of sixteen, Asha Bhosle, against the wishes of her family, married Ganpat Rao Bhosle, who was much older than her. Their marriage was not very successful and eventually they had to come back home to Pune from Mumbai. By that time, she had established herself as a playback singer in films like Geeta Dutt, Shamshad Begum and Lata Mangeshkar.
In the year 1957, musician O.P. Producer-director BR Chopra’s film ‘Naya Daur’, made under the music direction of Nayyar, brought an important milestone in Asha Bhosle’s cine career. In the year 1966, Asha Bhosle married R. in the third floor. He lent his voice to the song Aaja Aaja Main Hoon Pyaar Tera in D. Burman’s music, which earned him immense fame. In the sixties and seventies, Asha Bhosle was considered the voice of the famous dancer actress Helen of Hindi films.
Asha Bhosle sang for Helen in Teesri Manzil, O Haseena Zulfon Wali, Caravan Mein, Piya Tu Ab To Aaja, Mere Jeevan Saathi, Aao Na Gale Laga Lo Na and in Don, Ye Mera Dil Pyar Ka Deewana. Asha Bhosle, who has mastered singing from classical music to western tunes, changed her singing style with the film Umrao Jaan released in the year 1981.
With the film Umrao Jaan, Asha Bhosle came out of the image of a cabaret singer and pop singer and people realized that she was capable of singing all types of songs. When Asha Bhosle sang ghazals like ‘Dil Cheez Kya Hai’ and ‘In Aankhon Ki Masti Ke’ for Umrao Jaan, she herself was surprised that she could sing such songs.
He also received the first National Award of his career for this film. Asha Bhosle was deeply shocked by the death of her husband RD Burman in 1994 and she turned her back on singing, but how long would her magical voice remain away from the world? His voice was needed by every musician. After a few months of silence, it was initiated by music composer AR Rahman.
Rahman needed Asha Bhosle’s voice for his film Rangeela. He sang the song ..Tanha Tanha.. for the film Rangeela in 1995. This once again became a turning point in Asha Bhosle’s cine career and after that she entered the world of music filled with today’s pomp and show. Asha Bhosle received the Filmfare Award eight times as a singer and was awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the film industry’s highest honor in the year 2001.
Earlier, he was also honored with the National Award for the songs sung by him in Umrao Jaan and Izaazat.
