Cricket Australia confirmed his exclusion shortly before the start of the game, saying Smith was complaining of dizziness and nausea, symptoms he has struggled with intermittently in the past. On the morning of the match, he underwent a fitness test and was out and then left the field.
A Cricket Australia spokesperson said, “He has been feeling unwell for the past few days and has been experiencing symptoms such as nausea and dizziness. He has been kept under constant observation and monitoring and was very close to playing but due to the persistence of his symptoms, the decision has been taken not to play. He is being treated for a possible vestibular (balance) problem. This is a condition which Steve Smith has faced from time to time before. It is expected that he will be available for the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne.”
Let us tell you that Smith did not train on Monday, but came to bat in the nets on Tuesday.
Khawaja, who replaced Smith in the team, will turn 39 on Thursday (December 18) and will become the first 39-year-old player to play for Australia in 40 years.
